A 22-year-old tanker cleaner died and a welder was severely injured after an explosion took place in an empty furnace oil tanker at Sewree on Tuesday afternoon.

The deceased has been identified Lal Bahadur alias Shastri, a Kalyan resident, while the injured welder has been identified as Riyazul Wakil Shaikh, 50.

According to police, the incident took place at around 12.30pm, when an empty tanker (MH-04-CP-1467) which is used to ferry furnace oil had come to a roadside garage near Bharat Hotel at Haji Bunder Road in Indira Nagar area of Sewree for welding purpose.

“One of the lids of the tanker was leaking, which was being welded by Shaikh. While the welding process was on, an explosion took place and soon Shaikh and Shashtri were engulfed in fire. We suspect that some sort of hazardous chemical would have caught fire leading to the explosion. Such was the impact of the explosion that Shaikh and Shashtri were thrown on the road,” said an officer from Sewree police station.

He added one of the beat constables on patrolling duty intimated the police control room and fire brigade about the incident. Shaikh was rushed to KEM hospital, while Shashtri succumbed to the burn injuries. Shashtri’s family were informed about the incident, following which they rushed to the hospital, the police said.

“As per preliminary investigations, the said tanker belonged to one Shiv Kumar. We have registered a case under Sections 285 (negligent conduct with respect to fire or combustible matter), 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against garage owner identified only as Kallu. Shaikh worked for Kallu and once he is in the position of giving a statement we will get more information about Kallu from him,” said the officer.
