Starting October, government buildings, hotels, restaurants, malls and all commercial units in Brihanmumbai Municiapl Corporation’s A ward that have an area of over 20,000 sq mts or generate over 100 kg waste must compost wet waste at their own premises.

Ward officials said commercial units will have arrange space for composting and that they expect strict adherence.

Kiran Dighavkar, Assistant Commissioner, A ward, said that no extent will be granted to bulk waste generators after the deadline, which is the first week of October.

Earlier, on May 12, the ward had issued notices to all hotels, government offices, army cantonment area, banks and other organisations to set up facilities for organic waste converter, vermi-composting, bio-methanation or any other proven method in their backyard to treat wet waste at source.

Around 237 commercial establishment were served notices to set up a composting system by May 31, failing which the civic body said, it would stop picking up the garbage from June 1.

However, most establishments cited space crunch and sought more time.

Dighavkar said, “We are organising a two-day seminar on waste management where all such societies have been asked to attend. Various companies from India and abroad will showcase latest technology at the seminar. He said that bulk waste generators could adopt one of the technologies that would suit them best as per their requirement.

“Several hotels have approached and sought more time to start composting as they do not have enough space for the purpose. Some said they were looking for a common space where they could compost waste jointly,” he said.
