Most students bank on the objective questions in the examination, but on Monday when students walked out of their Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) exam centres after writing their biology paper, they were disappointed as they had a tough time solving the difficult objective questions.

"The objectives, especially 'answer in one sentence' were not the usual kind. Only one or two were from the textbook exercises," said Dhanalakshmi Bhat, a student of SIES College, Sion.
Over 56,500 students appeared for the paper.

A few students also complained about the difficulty level of the objectives. "The paper had topics that we had not even heard off. For instance, the question on restrictive digestion. I have lost almost seven to eight marks in the objectives. It will bring my overall score down," said Pavan Pujari, a class XII student, adding that teachers had informed them that the question on restrictive digestion was from the genetical engineering chapter.

"We had referred to the past exam papers and most of them had questions from the textbook exercise, but that wasn't the case this year. The questions were from the chapters, which not many of us had read," said Shruti Nair of SIES College.

On the other hand, teachers felt that the paper had the content from the textbook. "The level of difficulty was a little high but all the answers could be found in the textbook. The paper required students to be thorough with their preparation. Only studying the exercises behind the chapters was not enough," said Sudhir Patankar, biology teacher at Sathaye College.

Unlike them, it was a smooth sail for the 1,60,310 commerce students and 917 arts candidates, who appeared for the book keeping and accountancy, and philosophy exams respectively.
