An NRI national lost Rs 20.29 lakh when a fraudster, in connivance with a bank staff, replaced the victims contact details with his own. The accused submitted bogus documents and changed the victim's registered mobile number linked with the bank account to siphon the money.

Dindoshi Police is probing the case and an internal investigation by the bank revealed that one of its staff was involved in the fraud.

According to police, the victim Balkrishna VN, realised that Rs 20.29 lakh was withdrawn from his bank account when he checked the balance. When he checked with the bank, it was revealed that recently, the bank had received a request from him, asking to change his registered mobile number and for a duplicate debit card.

"The fraudster first replaced all contact details of the victim from the bank with his own and then requested for a debit card with forged documents. Due to the change in the contact details and issuance of debit cards, the fraudster managed to siphon off all the money from the victim's bank account without there being a scope for the victim to know. Khan allegedly used the card to buy jewelry, cell phones and to withdraw cash," said a police officer from Dindoshi Police Station.

The fraud came to light when the victim inquired with the bank and came to know about his contact details and other details having been changed -- six months after the incident happened.

"The internal inquiry revealed that the bank's staff Nitin Ranje, allegedly helped Khan submit the form and get a duplicate debit card. Ranje has been suspended by the bank. We are still conducting the inquiry in the matter and no arrests have been made so far," the officer said.
