On many occasions people pick up fights with the towing contractor for wrongly towing away their vehicle as they think they had parked it in parking zone.
To bring in more transparency in the process of towing vehicles, Thane traffic police have installed CCTV cameras and megaphones on every towing van. This move is expected to reduce the number of spats between the public and towing contractors.
On many occasions people pick up fights with the towing contractor for wrongly towing away their vehicle as they think they had parked it in parking zone. "To deal with such incidents and to bring in more transparency in the day-to-day functioning, we have made it mandatory for towing contractors to have CCTV cameras on their vans," said an official from the Thane traffic police department.
The camera records whatever happens on the van and the recordings are kept for 15 days as evidence. "So, if someone feel that their vehicle was wrongly towed or the towing people were rude to them, these recordings can be referred to in such cases," he added.
Moreover, the van also has megaphones to make announcements before towing away the vehicles. "Many a times people just park their car at a wrong place for two minutes to buy medicine or go to a store. In such a scenario, the towing contractor will make an announcement and the person can come and pay the no-parking fine and take his vehicle away. He does not have to pay the towing charges," said the official.
The traffic police said that in case they find a towing contractor at fault his contract will be suspended. "Also, all towing vans which do not have CCTV cameras and megaphones will be suspended and not allowed to operate till they do it," he says.
People can also contact the helpline/whatsapp number of Thane traffic police for pursuing a case against the towing contractor.
