As part of its preparations for the monsoon season, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to use remote control swing loader to clean culvert falling under the railways' jurisdiction. The purpose is to ensure that the railway tracks do not get flooded during heavy rainfall in monsoon.

Last monsoon, the BMC used high-resolution cameras to check clogging in culverts; the silts were removed accordingly. The initiative proved to be successful to some extent.

This year, the BMC has decided to buy remote control swing loaders to clean culverts. "The purpose of using a machine is to prevent labourers from being exposed to hazardous and toxic gases that could be present in nullahs," said an official from Storm Water Drain of BMC.

There are around 100 major culverts across the Central and Western railway which needs to be cleaned before the arrival of monsoon every year. The BMC, as well as the railways, take a number of precautions like installing a pump to flush out water during monsoons. However, chocked culvert often results in water logging along the railway track.

The proposal will be tabled before the standing committee on Wednesday for approval. The civic body is set to spend around Rs 2.73 crore to buy the machine. The civic body has planned to use the machine before the monsoon. The robot will also be used to drainage systems in the city over.

"There are nullahs in the southern part of the city that were constructed during the British-era and many of them have not been cleaned properly for years," another official from the SWD department said.
