Anjali Mishra, a class 10 student from Podar High School, has made up her mind. She will take commerce in the eleventh standard. "I want to do my MBA, and I don't want to take up anything else," she said.

Over the years, commerce has emerged as favourite for many students in Mumbai, which has resulted in the cut-offs for the course being in the high seventies and eighties. This year, the trend is unlikely to reverse.

"This is the commercial capital of the country. The demand for commerce is bound to be high. For students who do commerce the sky is the limit. They have multiple options," said Seetha R, principal, RA Podar College.

Dr MN Welling, principal of Narsee Monjee College, said. "The rush and competition for professional courses has diverted a lot of students away from these courses. The ones who previously used to prefer doing a pure science degree are turning to commerce as an easier option of study." On completion of the course, they would have many options, he said.

The emergence of management as a viable option after a bachelor degree is attracting many students to the course. The value-added commerce courses, too, are a big draw.

"I want to pursue B.Com in banking and insurance. The insurance sector is opening up, and having good knowledge about it is important for career prospects later," said Alok Banerjee from Sydenham College.

Also, doing a commerce degree gives students the much-needed space and time to pursue other interests while studying.
