To ensure that construction debris does not remain on city streets or is dumped illegally on wetlands to reclaim the land for illegal shanties, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started a service called Debris on Call. Citizens can call on 022-24935687/88/89 and ask for construction debris to be collected and systematically disposed of. Started from August 2014 up to December 2015, the BMC has collected 26,244 metric tons of garbage and earned revenue of Rs64,57,817 lakh.

The service was used the most in Bhandup, Kanjurmarg (S ward), Andheri, Versova, Juhu and Vile Parle (K-west) and Girgaum-Malabar Hill (D ward).

Through a notification dated August 1, 2014, the BMC, in order to minimise the resulting hazard and to ensure safe and systematic disposal, appointed an agency for all 24 wards of Mumbai that would be just a phone call away. The civic body is providing the service at subsidised rates.

Construction debris that's carelessly disposed of on the streets gets in the way of pedestrians as well as motorists. It also contains sharp and dangerous objects that pose a threat to people walking close to it.

Usually, people do not dispose of debris properly and leave it lying around, mainly due to the cost factor involved in transporting it to a dumping ground.

Additional municipal commissioner Pallavi Darade has appealed to citizens to get contact details from their local ward office for the collection of debris.
