A 29-year-old Bengaluru-based pianist allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the 12th floor of a building in Bandra on Saturday morning, leaving several leading musicians and his close friends in shock.

Karan Joseph, hailed as a child prodigy, had started playing the instrument at the age of five and had migrated to Mumbai to try his luck in the music industry. As per preliminary inquiries, the Bandra police said it seemed that Joseph had slipped into depression.

After performing in several concerts in Bengaluru, Joseph reached Mumbai on Saturday and jumped off his friend's residence, the Concord building, around 9am.

"Joseph has been suffering from depression for a long time. He was staying at his friend, Rishi Shah's house, here, from where he allegedly jumped off," said the cop, adding that his friends were watching TV when Karan suddenly rushed towards the window and jumped. The friends realised only after they heard a loud noise and immediately informed the police. Joseph was rushed to Bhabha hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

Nicknamed Madfingers, Joseph held degrees from the Royal School of Music, Trinity College of Music and the Bangalore School of Music and later went on to study the Piano professionally at Berklee College of Music in the USA.

Musician Vishal Dadlani, who too expressed grief over the incident, tweeted stating: "Destroyed. Karan Joseph, one of the most incredible Indian musicians, has committed suicide. Played with Pentagram on our MTV Unplugged set. KaranJoseph was a genius. Should have been far more celebrated than he was. It's really unfair, how the music scene works in India."

"An Accidental Death Report (ADR) has been registered with Bandra police station. His mobile phone will also be sent to the forensic lab. We are carrying out an initial inquiry into the matter," said Rashmi Karandikar, Deputy Commissioner of Police and Mumbai police spokesperson, adding that Karan's parents have been informed to take custody of the body.

Several other musicians and close friends expressed shock on social media over Joseph's death.

"All I can say is that it is a tragic loss to the music. He was a kind, soft spoken soul and I had honour of sharing the stage with him. It's a very disheartening news that a phenomenal musician and friend is no more," said musician Alok Kulkarni.
