Dirty premises, doors thick with grime and rickety buildings – that is the general perception of civic hospitals. But, hold on. Not all civic hospitals fall in this category any more. Dr RN Cooper General Hospital in Juhu and Hindu Hruday Samrat Balasaheb Thackeray Trauma Care Hospital in Jogeshwari are two such hospitals that stand out for their spic and span surroundings.

Cooper hospital was redeveloped and opened to the public in 2013 as a 636-bedded facility. From its spiral stairways to the squeaky clean kitchen, it is on a par with any private hospital. Its security has been instructed to fine anyone caught spitting on the premises.

Talking about the clean premises, dean of the hospital Dr Ramesh Chaturvedi said, "We have outsourced cleanliness to a contractor who is paid according to the rates decided by the corporation." According to Dr Chaturvedi, he spends an hour in the morning every day just walking from one department to another in the hospital as well as the medical college. "Just the knowledge that I will be coming for my rounds and inspecting the wards keeps everyone alert," he added.

The trauma hospital that is along the Western Express Highway (WEH) in Jogeshwari is a peripheral facility where several departments are yet to open. However, before it could fully developed facility-wise, the hospital has set an example in cleanliness. Even its Out Patient Department (OPD) that sees several trauma patients is a lesson in neatness. Security too has not been ignored here and every person entering is checked – something that stands out for a civic hospital.

"We take security seriously and no one can simply walk into the premises," said medical superintendent Dr Shashikant Wadekar.
