The Mumbai Police are planning to set up two more zones in the city, considering the rising population and crime rate. The zones will be in the northern and eastern suburbs.

Currently, the police have 13 zones each headed by a deputy police commissioner. Once a proposal is made, it will be sent to the state government for approval.

"We are planning to set up the zones in the northern and eastern suburbs because growth in population has been seen in these areas. The decision has been taken considering population, crime rate, policing and law and order issues," joint commissioner of police, law and order, Dhananjay Kamlakar told dna. He added that the new zones would enhance the quality of policing in these places.

Northern suburbs comprise zones XI and XII, which cover the area from Goregaon to Dahisar, while eastern suburbs comprises zones VI and VII, which cover the area from Ghatkopar to Mulund and Chembur to Mankhurd.

The police are in the process of chalking out which police stations from these areas would come under new zones.

Asked whether new police stations will come up for the two zones, Kamlakar said, "As of now, just the existing police stations will be reorganised. If satisfied with the proposal, we will send it to the state government for its approval."
