As anxious students trooped into the college for their class XII board practical examinations, they were unprepared for a protest drama by the non-teaching staff.

Colleges were forced to postpone their Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) board class XII practical and oral exams because a statewide association of non-teaching staff boycotted the exams. They did not allow colleges to conduct the internal exams.

At Rizvi College, Bandra, the non-teaching staff such as the clerks, peons and lab attendants did not allow students to enter the lab. The staff locked up the lab equipment and walked out of the college, leaving the students and teachers in the lurch.

To make matters worse, an education inspector from the western zone Suresh Mali was sent to the college to resolve the problem. Principal Farooqui MZ said Mali started putting pressure on the teachers to look for the lab equipment and hold the exams. In the chaos, a 50-year-old chemistry teacher, Pushpa Bhinde, had a stroke and collapsed.

“She was admitted to Bhabha Hospital. Her condition is stable,” said Farooqui.

He is outraged by the attitude of education inspector and the education authorities. “Since holding a practical exam was impossible as the equipment was locked away, we were going to conduct a viva of the students and hold the practicals later. But the education officials kept terrorising the staff and even threatened to blacklist the college,” he said.

DG Ruparel College in Matunga was forced to cancel its physics, chemistry and maths practicals on Wednesday. Some of the colleges had to call for police protection to hold their exams. Mumbai divisional board chairperson, Laxmikant Pandey said: “The colleges which were unable to complete their internal exams will be allowed to hold ‘out of term’ exam between March 26 and April 1.”
