After the authorities froze bank accounts of the Islamic International School (IIS), which is run by Dr Zakir Naik whose organisation, Islamic Research Foundation (IRF) was declared unlawful by the central government, Minister for Education, Vinod Tawde, reiterated that students will not miss out on education. The school which has around 165 students (89 boys and rest girls) has pre-primary, primary and secondary levels and imparts education in IGCSE curriculum, Quranic and Arabic.

“The number of students are so less that they can easily be adjusted into other schools. One thing is sure that no student will suffer and that will be taken care by the government,”said Tawd.

On Saturday, as the news of freezing of bank accounts and raids at IRF centers became public, the principal of the school said that they only hoped students are not affected. On Friday, Imran Qureshi, principal of IIS said, “Daily activities like providing mid-day meals to pre-primary students, snacks to the staff and daily chores got affected due to freezing of accounts. We managed expenses from my pocket but I request government and everyone that the teaching and learning process does not get disturbed. It is their exam time right now.” The school which is teaching IGCSE curriculum since 2010 is having mid-term exams that will end by December first week.

It is not clear whether the government will shut down the school altogether or give any option to teachers and other staff. Tawde did not respond when asked about them. The school has a student ratio of one is to three to test students who can memorise Quran and impart religious studies. Total number of teachers for academics (secular subjects) are 30, for Arabic eight and for Quranic 35.

Functional from 2001 onwards, the school opted for IGCSE curriculum in 2010. “We have applied for affiliation and we should have got it this year. Our students have been giving exams as private students from schools that are affiliated to the IGCSE,” said Qureshi. Whether the government will take over the school or give any subsidy in future, Tawde said “no student will be deprived of education”.
