The Metro-1 corridor connecting Versova and Ghatkopar was expected to improve the traffic situation in the city. It was also expected to cater to future travel needs of the masses. However, office-goers said that daily management of traffic under the Metro line is becoming a bigger hassle each day.

While on one hand, there has been a steep rise in the number of Metro riders, many people still use BEST buses, share auto-rickshaws or travel in their private vehicles.

"In a city like Mumbai, where there are less number of roads and more number of vehicles, frequent traffic jams are expected. While driving towards Chakala from the Western Express Highway (WEH) on road, it is a nightmare to be stuck in traffic for 25 minutes at every signal. There is no scope of reaching office in time due to the bottlenecks under the Metro line. In five years, traffic has not been any better, " said Viral Mistry (29), an executive working with a private company located in Chakala.

"The traffic has certainly increased in the last five years. In the area close to the Versova Metro station, bottlenecks are frequent at D N Nagar, Four Bungalows bus depot, and at K L Walwalkar Marg. A few more roads connecting the metro station to Lokhandwala, Yari Road, Juhu, and Oshiwara adds to the congestion during peak hours. In the Ghatkopar area, vehicles coming in from Andheri station, MIDC, Seepz and Mahakali Caves Road cause congestion during rush hours," said a senior traffic police officer on the condition of anonymity.

According to the traffic police, the reason why people face hurdles below metro stations namely, Chakala, Marol, Airport Road, and Saki Naka is because the roads have become narrow due to the metro pillars. There are too many traffic signals located at a distance of only a few metres away from each other.

"The challenge that the traffic police face is that many vehicles, especially bikes, jump off the signal. Share auto-rickshaws violate the rules more often. The footpaths have been encroached by hawkers due to which people walk on the roads making the roads congested for vehicles. In areas like D N Nagar, Sahar, Saki Naka and Ghatkopar, the traffic division is constantly working on this to make the roads free for commute," the officer added.
