No plan to disturb the existing OBC quota: Revenue minister Chandrakant Patil

In Maharashtra, the OBC has given 32% reservation, 13% to scheduled caste and 7% to scheduled tribe that is total 52%.

After the Backward Class commission ascertaining the social and economical backwardness of Maratha community and recommendations of including them into OBC category, the OBC leaders across the parties started asserting and opposing this move saying that separate reservations should be given to Marathas, they swhould not be the part of an existing 32% OBC reservations. 

In Maharashtra, the OBC has given 32% reservation, 13% to scheduled caste and 7% to scheduled tribe that is total 52%. If Maratha’s are given the reservations, then it will cross the Supreme Court’s cap of 50% reservations.

Senior NCP MLA Chhagan Bhujbal in Nasik said that they have full support for Maratha community giving reservations however they should should  not be made a part the existing OBC reservations. 

“Government can give separate reservations to Maratha. The existing communities reservations should not be disturbed. If this thing happens,  then we will oppose such kind of move, “ Bhujbal warned.

Besides, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis himself clarified that the existing communities reservations will not be touched. “If the government decides to make the sub category within the OBC by increasing its total percentage of reservation, then this move will heat the several legal hurdles and that can also lead for further complications. The easiest way is to add Marathas, into an existing OBC category only, “ said Purushottam Khedekar, president of Maratha Seva Sangh.

Chandrakant Patil, senior BJP and revenue minister on Saturday said that they are confident of giving reservations to Maratha community. He said that they have no plan to disturb the existing OBC quota. 

“We are confident that reservations decision with support of backward commission report will surely stand in the court. We will provide battery of renown lawyers to support the government’s quota decisions. Therefore, people should not worry about the tenability of reservation decisions at all, “ Patil said. 

State government has called the cabinet meeting on Sunday to open the Backward Commission report and hand over to the cabinet sub committee headed by revenue minister Patil.
