Since the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education started giving photocopies of answer sheets to students, it seems the Mumbai division board is receiving more complaints regarding mistakes in revaluation. To put a check on these mistakes, the board has now issued notices to all the erring teachers and has penalised them at the rate of Rs10 per mistake.

The revaluation of complete answer sheets started in 2013-2014. Under the provision, students could apply for their answer sheets' photocopy as well. According to the Mumbai division officials, though the erring teachers were penalised earlier as well, the number of mistakes has increased after students started getting photocopies.

Secretary of Mumbai division board, SY Chandekar, said, "It is nothing new. We penalise teachers for wrong revaluation of papers. But the number of complaints has increased after students started getting photocopies, as now they take the answer sheets to experts to check. After the photocopy scheme started, at least 10-20% teachers have received our penalty letters for wrong revaluation."

Uday Nare, former board member and teacher at Andheri-based Hansraj Morarji Public School, said, "Teachers are burdened with work during board exam – from supervising to checking board as well as school-level exam answer papers. Mistakes are bound to happen. The board shouldn't be penalising teachers."

Uma Dhere, vice-president of Congress Teachers Cell, said, "In language papers, every teacher has his or her own pattern of checking. Those differences are not mistakes. The board should understand that and not hold teachers responsible."
