Class 9 students at state board schools would no longer have oral exams for languages and internal assessment marks for social sciences as per a recent circular issued by the government on Thursday. The circular to this effect was issued by the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE).

As per the circular, students would have to attempt for 100 marks theory examination for all the three languages and social sciences which currently has a 20 mark oral/assignment and 80 marks theory component. "There would be no oral exams for the languages, and assignment marks for social sciences have also been scrapped. There were a lot of instances of schools inflating the internal marks of their students to increase their scores. The move aims to stop this practice and test students in a realistic way," said an official from the state education department.

According to the official, the same marking pattern would be implemented for class 10 from the next year.

According to the circular, students would continue to have 20 marks practical examination for Science while 20 marks in Mathematics would be for internal assessment. Mathematics would have two papers — Algebra and Geometry of 40 marks each.

"Scrapping the oral exams for languages does not seem like a good idea. Oral exams help teachers in evaluating the verbal skills of students in languages, reading, recitation etc. which would no longer be there. However, the move would help address the inflation of marks that some schools were doing," said Uday Nare, a teacher at Hansraj Morarji School in Andheri.

As per the circular, students would also have to pick a vocational subject from a list of 10 such subjects at class 9.

NEW PATTERN

100 marks exam for languages
100 marks exam for social sciences
80 marks exam for mathematics + 20 marks for internal assessment
80 marks exam for science + 20 marks for practical exam
