The first day of the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) exams ended smoothly with 13 lakh students appearing across the state and 3.18 lakh appearing in the city on Saturday. Maharashtra state board officials claimed that the most colleges followed the Bombay high court ruling to ensure uninterrupted supply of electricity to exam centres by installing generators.

Officials also claimed that there were few calls for concessions and no complaints from students. Uday Nare, member of the Mumbai divisional board, said, "The examinations went smoothly across the city. Most of the colleges followed the high court order and installed generators in exam centres."

S Y Chandekar, secretary of the Mumbai divisional board, said, "There were no complaints from students in any centre. A few students demanded the concessions."

This year, students appearing for board exams were for the first time given the provision of having the question paper in hand 10 minutes before the exam starts. While most of them were happy with the provision, some said that even an extra 10 minutes seemed insufficient while answering the lengthy language papers, which are always difficult to complete.

Simeen Mullaji, an HSC student, said, "The provision of extra 10 minutes was quite helpful. But since the language papers are lengthy, the time given to write the exam is never enough."

Revati Sananse, another student said, "We are fortunate that we were given the question paper 10 minutes before. I was able to decide what questions I want to attempt."
