Despite the incidents of wall collapse in the district, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) is finding it difficult to maintain its schools due to lack of funds. Students are at the risk of their lives as around 29 civic school buildings are more than 30 years old. Though, the civic body has recently began the required repair works, it does not have funds to take repair all the dilapidated school buildings. Hence, is focusing only on the most dangerous structures keeping students safety in mind.

"Almost two months after the schools reopened, TMC is taking preventive measures and conducting repair works that is needed to ensure students' safety. The civic body has just began with the safety audit of school buildings, which clearly highlights their lackadaisical attitude. There were heavy showers in the last few days and it is too late to take action," said a teacher from one of the civic schools requesting anonymity.

Recently, the civic body had demolished four schools which were touted as extremely dangerous buildings and shifted around 12,000 students to other TMC buildings. Despite the lack of funds, it has managed to take action against those that needed urgent attention. The other buildings will see repair works like plastering, waterproofing of the walls and fixing the drainage system too.

Another reason for the slow rehabilitation is that the work of conducting structural audit of civic schools was given to a private organisation since 2012.
