No end in sight to Navi Mumbai's apathy towards animals

Deaths of strays due to lack of proper treatment is one of the main reasons behind their rising number in the satellite city. "This death could have been avoided had there been a well-equipped animal hospital in the city," said Arati Chauhan, Nerul-based animal activist.

A speeding car ran over a stray dog in CBD Belapur on Saturday, but the animal succumbed to the injuries for lack of timely medical attention. The incident came to light only on Monday as the carcass was left lying by the roadside for a day and a half and later disposed of in a dump yard.

Deaths of strays due to lack of proper treatment is one of the main reasons behind their rising number in the satellite city. "This death could have been avoided had there been a well-equipped animal hospital in the city," said Arati Chauhan, Nerul-based animal activist.

Taking care of animals is one of the duties of the local civic body, in this case, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC). And in spite of having a directive provision under the Maharashtra Regional Town Planning Act, 1966, to compulsorily have an animal hospital in every new planned city, Navi Mumbai doesn't have one even now.

According to an RTI application filed by animal rights activist Aditi Lahiri, the City and Industrial Development Corporation had handed over a piece of land in Vashi to the NMMC, solely for building an animal hospital. "Response to the application revealed that the land transfer was complete, but due to lack of political willingness, nothing has moved ahead," she said.

There is a temporary sterilisation centre run by the NMMC in coordination with In Defence of Animals in Turbhe, but it's said to be ill-equipped to handle any emergency situation. "The centre doesn't even have an x-ray machine, let alone other equipment to provide proper medication to an injured animal."

Chauhan said, "It has happened numerous times that I have tried to help an injured animal but failed due to the fact that the nearest hospital too is far away. The time lost in commuting is what has resulted in deaths in most situations. It is high time now that the NMMC builds an animal hospital."
