No dadagiri during elections, Mumbai police prepares list of 1,000 criminals

In the wake of elections, Mumbai police chief Rakesh Maria, has asked each police station and crime branch unit to prepare a list of top 10 criminals of their jurisdiction and take action upon them. A list of 1,000 such criminals have already been prepared. The police will now ensure that these criminals are either behind bars or out of the city before elections.

According to police sources, a meeting was recently headed by Maria with all the senior police officers and inspectors of all the police stations and a clear mandate was given that all those anti-social elements that can create nuisance during the elections should be flushed out of the city.

Sources added that the senior inspectors were told that those need to figure in the list should be gangsters, goons, slum lords, extortionists and eve-teasers.

Following the meeting, all the 93 police stations have provided their list to the police commissioner's office. Apart from this, all the 12 units of the crime branch were asked to prepare a list of the top 10 criminals.

"We would now take an action upon them in the form of externment or put them behind bars as per the provisions of Criminal Procedure Code."

The police stations have prepared their list, the newly formed anti-terror cells from all the police stations have been asked to prepare list of those who sympathies with terrorist outfits and are possible rioters, sources said.

"There was a clear cut instruction from the police chief that police presence on streets should increase and there should be zero tolerance for street crimes. We would not tolerate any dadagiri during elections," said another police officer.
