Monday was supposed be a day for grand celebrations at the Amin household, but fate had other plans for the senior fire officer. SG Amin, who was officially promoted to the rank of deputy chief fire officer at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's general body meeting on Monday, is battling for his life at Airoli's National Burns Centre.

Amin received 90% burn injuries, along with severe lung injuries from inhaling smoke for nearly two hours while stuck in the debris of Gokul Niwas building in Kalbadevi. He got stuck after a slab collapsed on the first floor.

The doctors treating Amin have postponed further surgeries till his condition stabilises. "We put him on dialysis from evening as his kidneys were not functioning well. He is on ventilator support because he is not able to breathe due to the lung injuries. He is conscious," said Dr Sunil Keswani, director, National Burns centre, Airoli.

A divisional fire officer, Amin was the acting in-charge of the deputy chief fire officer portfolio for over six months now, after Vilas Kuveskar retired on November 1, 2013.

The proposal for Amin's promotion was first submitted to the BMC administration from the department on October 31 2013, which was cleared by additional municipal commissioner (city) on February 20, 2014.

As per BMC rules, the proposal has to get cleared by the civic works committee before being placed before the civic general body. While this particular proposal was listed in the urgent business list three months ago, it has come to light that mayor Snehal Ambekar had not cleared the proposal till Monday.

A senior fire officer said, "It's sad the promotion comes so late, when he (Amin) is in such a critical condition. He could have got the promotion months earlier, but probably it was not very urgent for the general body."

Meanwhile, doctors are going ahead with a four-hour-long surgery for Nesarikar; it will involve removing the dead tissues and doing skin grafting. "He gained consciousness this morning and is responding well to the treatment. Seeing the improvement in his condition, we have decided to go ahead with the major skin-grafting surgery. We will be using skin from our skin bank."
