There’s something about Davos. The picturesque Swiss town which owes most of its fame to the World Economic Forum it hosts every year never fails to draw a more than enthusiastic response, though some uncharitably attribute it to being a legitimate chance for the world’s rich and famous to make an annual inspection of their private lockers. Idle imaginative inflation apart, we do note that there’s been a drop in the number of women representatives making their presence felt in this largely alpha corporate male gathering - banking baroness Chanda Kochhar is among the ones who’ve given this edition a miss, though others like Naina Lal Kidwai, Nita Ambani and Shobhana Bhartia are keeping their date with the stunning snow-clad hills of the Alpine resort.

While a number of Indian politician’s including Kamal Nath, Praful Patel, Anand Sharma and P Chidambaram are among the attendees as usual, in a way Prithviraj Chavan is the odd man out — even if simply because he is the only Indian chief minister amid a bunch of Davos-savvy Union Ministers. It’s a critical opportunity for the Maharashtra CM to impress at least 30 top MNCs about the perks of investing in his cash-strapped state — something he missed out of last year.

Speaking of cash strapped, we hear that after Chavan and his entourage had checked into the airport, they were asked if they needed to convert their rupees into Swiss francs. With very little time to go for boarding, the Chief Minister — who is not in the habit of carrying any cash or cards — nearly panicked when he realised that his officials were also just carrying pocket change with them. A flurry of phone calls and frantic instructions ensured that some cash reached them just
in time. We can only imagine who the CM would have called if the “cash crunch” had struck him
after he landed in Zurich.
