It is now clear that no cabinet expansion would be effected by the Devendra Fadnavis government for now as it has increased the number of portfolios as additional charge with the ministers of state.

The recent development of NCP and BJP coming together for clearing the no-confidence motion and Shiv Sena keeping the government on tenterhooks on a daily basis are the major reasons for chief minister Devednra Fadnavis keeping a cabinet expansion in abeyance.

Ministers of state Dilip Kamble, Ram Shinde and Rajnit Patil have been given additional charge of a number of departments this week. The decision has been given the nod and the governor has also signed the notification in this regard. The government now has 20 BJP and 10 Shiv Sena ministers in the state cabinet while it has a stipulated capacity of 42 ministers. That still leaves scope for addition of 12 ministers.

The fact that Shiv Sena is not coming to terms even though it is part of government is one of the major reasons Fadnavis has decided to keep the issue of cabinet expansion in abeyance, informed a senior leader. According to party and government sources, the cabinet expansion could be effected before the monsoon session of the state assembly.

It was speculated that the government could effect the Cabinet expansion before the budget session so that it would not face any difficulty by taking along the smaller alliance partners, including Republican Patry of India (Athavale) led by Rajya Sabha MP Ramdas Athavale, Rashtriya Samaj Party led by MLC Mahadev Jankar, Shiv Sangram which is not yet a registered party and led by MLC Vinayak Mete and the Swabhimani Party led by Lok Sabha MP Raju Shetty. Jankar and Mete have been accommodated as MLCs and Mete is given the charge of committee for construction of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj memorial at Arabian Sea. RPI leader Athavale is made Rajya Sabha MP from Maharashtra but Swabhimani Party is yet to be accommodated.
