The strike call by the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST) Employees Union slated for Tuesday has been called off. The strike was called to protest the delay in the payment of their February salaries.

Speaking to DNA, union chief Shashank Rao said that since the BEST management had given in writing that the disbursal of salaries would begin from Tuesday, the strike call has been pushed back for the moment.

"The BEST management needs to pay a cumulative sum of Rs 160 crore as salary for which they have made arrangements, they have told us. The BEST is taking a bank loan and is also deferring a Rs 40 crore sum that it needs to pay the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) over a previous loan taken by BMC for BEST. All this money will now be used to pay the salaries," said Rao.
