Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) has come out with an advisory for its drivers for monsoon, and has also started training sessions for them, to avoid bus breakdowns and accidents.

An NMMT official said, "During rains, potholes surface on roads and that is the reason for breakdown of vehicles, or accidents. To prevent this, drivers are being trained on how to drive during the rainy season and what care should be taken to prevent breakdowns."

A circular in this regard has been issued by NMMT, which advises drivers to check if bus wipers are in working condition while taking possession of the vehicle, drive bus within speed limit, not to apply urgent brakes, take care while driving during the initial rains and so on.

Frequent breakdowns of buses is a major cause of headache for the cash-strapped transport body, as the mechanical department blames the design of the buses supplied under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) scheme and the bad conditions of the roads in the city for the breakdowns.

"The design of buses exposes suspension, which can easily get damaged when buses run on bad roads. Also, each driver has his own way of driving the vehicle. That too plays a role in the frequent breakdowns," said an NMMT official.

He added, "People too have to suffer because of the breakdowns and during monsoon, it becomes more troublesome. We hope for a smooth ride during the rains after the training session for drivers."
