Technocrats, a team of enthusiastic civil engineering students from the Mukesh Patel School of Technology Management and Engineering (MPSTME) of NMIMS University, has brought glory to the varsity by bagging five awards at the American Society of Civil Engineers' (ASCE) Carolina conference 2016 in the US. The competition was held from March 31 to April 2.

After a rigorous selection procedure, a team of 22 students, comprising of undergraduate civil engineering students, was formed at MPSTME. The team has, since then, worked diligently for all competitions held in ASCE.

The students won the first prize in T-shirt making, third position in hydraulic arm and first prize in environmental engineering. It also won the award for best sustainable design for canoe, best sustainability video and the most marketable product for their environmental engineering model.

The team, however, faced several problems. A concrete canoe named Agni, which was dedicated to late Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, could not reach the venue on the day of the competition due to shipping and custom issues. The next day, however, it became quite popular among the competing universities, after the team's Facebook page was discovered and the team presented their project.

Another challenge that the team faced was an environmental engineering model got stuck at customs and security in Kuwait. The students then prepared a prototype of their model within two days and presented their model efficiently.

Technocrats team leader Vedant Gandhi said, "Today, the entire NMIMS staff, including dean Dr Sharad Mhaiskar and team mentor Dr Meenal Mategonkar, is proud of the team and its sincere effort. The students have shown the power of team spirit and unity in true sense and have inspired the budding civil engineers of MPSTME to participate at International platforms. Way to go Team Technocrats."
