The tenants of Satyam Krida Mandal, BDD Chawl at NM Joshi Marg in Lower Parel are happy that the redevelopment of the British-era Bombay Development Directorate (BDD) Chawl will begin later this week. However, they are not celebrating yet.
Krishnkant Nalage, resident and secretary of BDD Chawl Upkram Seva Mandal, NM Joshi Marg said, "We have waited for over two decades for the redevelopment of BDD chawls. But, we will celebrate once the project is complete."
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will launch the redevelopment of the BDD chawls by performing bhoomi pujan on Saturday at Jamboore Maidan in Worli. Around 13,500 tenants stand to benefit from the redevelopment initiative. The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (Mhada) is the nodal agency for the project. L&T Realty and Shapoorji Pallonji were shortlisted for spearheading the redevelopment project.
While some tenants expressed their happiness, a few are not sure if they will get a house once the redevelopment is complete. Satyam Dhumale, another resident of BDD Chawl in NM Joshi Marg said, "There should be an agreement between all tenants and Mhada regarding details of the homes each tenant will get, amenities and the corpus for maintenance." Mhada will deposit a corpus as part of each tenant's contribution towards the maintenance of the building or society.
A tenant of the Worli Chawl said the corpus for the building's maintenance should be Rs 6 lakh. "The building will have lifts and other amenities. We will require a larger corpus for maintenance," said Bhavesh Parmar Patil, another tenant. Some tenants want to attend a few more meetings with authorities to clear doubts involving he transit camp facility and when exactly their buildings will be demolished, among other concerns.
