After clearing a series of administrative hurdles, the proposed first National Law University (NLU) of Maharashtra has finally got a temporary place. An apparently unused two-storey building, in the premises of state-run Ismail Yusuf College at Jogeshwari, was handed over to the NLU's vice chancellor Prof BP Panda on Friday.

The handing-over formality was completed by a team of top officials from the state higher and technical education department, who visited the college.

Confirming the development, Prof Panda told dna, "Its good that the NLU has started taking shape now. However, this is just a temporary arrangement. We would ultimately need our own campus, for which we have requested the state to give us at least 15 acres of land in Mumbai or 55-60 acres of land in the outskirts of the metro region."

Sources said the NLU is eyeing a chunk of land in the 55-acre Ismail Yusuf college campus mainly because it is in the heart of the city and near the airport. A top official from the higher education department however, said that the NLU would come up at Judicial Academy, Uttan, as per the original plan.

Ismail Yusuf College officials were reportedly unhappy with the government's decision to accommodate NLU in the campus without saying how long the arrangement would last. While Principal SR Jadhav was unavailable for comments, a senior professor said, "The NLU was given a few rooms in the college premises in October last year for the time being. We were told the NLU would start at Maharashtra Judicial Academy, Uttan in the next few months. Now we have to part with one whole building, which may be forever."

Meanwhile, Prof. Panda said, "In the next 10-15 days, we would be in a position to say something about the admission process this year."
