The Thane Matdata Jagran Manch has organised a Nivara Parishad on April 21 for the benefit of those residents whose houses are and will be demolished for various civic projects or are forced to stay in dilapidated homes due to policy reasons. Renowned activist Medha Patkar will also be present at this Parishad.

There are over 1 lakh families in Thane who are soon going to be homeless even after having a roof over their heads. "There are many new civic and government projects coming up in the city in the coming months. But there are no places to rehabilitate those who will be affected by this project," says Sanjeev Sane, Thane Matdata Jagran Manch (TMJM). TJMJ is a citizens body which has leading doctors, lawyers, professors, advocates and other professionals as its members.

Moreover, the cluster development policy has also led to ambiguity among Thanekars. "When the cluster policy was announced by the TMC it said 13 lakh houses will be built in Thane. This is good news for builders and politicians as 13 lakh homes will bring in that much money to the real estate sector," he adds.

"But what about those who have bigger homes which will be taken away to build the cluster? Will they get the same area? Will authorised buildings be included in these clusters?" he asks.

Similarly, lack of proper redevelopment policy of old buildings in Naupada and other areas of Thane will also affect people. "Since there is only an FSI of one, none of the builders want to redevelop these buildings. And people are forced to stay in dilapidated structures which may collapse anytime," he says.

All these factors will cause huge displacement of people in the coming years says TJMJ. Hence, to mobilise the support of all those Thanekars who are going to lose their homes due to some project or the other for no fault of theirs, TJMJ has organised the Nivara Parishad on Sunday at B-cabin road, Thane west at 5.30pm.

"We have seen that when slum people get displaced, lower middle class and middle class does not support them and vice-versa. But all these projects are going to affect all these classes. Hence, we are trying to the bridge the gap between them through this Parishad," he says.
