A two-member team from the National Human Rights Commission visited Byculla jail on Tuesday in connection with the investigation into the case of Manjula Shetye, a convict who was murdered inside prison on June 23 last year.
"A two member team of NHRC inspectors from the investigation wing had visited Byculla Jail on Tuesday morning for spot inspection and made inquiries with prison staffers and few inmates regarding Shetye murder case," an NHRC official told DNA.
He added, "The team will be in city for two days. After speaking to the officials and persons connected with the probe into the case, the team will submit their report to the Commission."
Shetye was allegedly beaten to death by the jail staff over a minor issue after which six prison officials including Jailor Manisha Pokharkar, and constables Bindu Naikade, Waseema Shaikh, Shital Shegaonkar, Surekha Gulve and Aarti Shingne, were arrested on July 1, 2017.
The police have filed a 1000-page charge sheet comprising statements of 187 witnesses.
