In the wake of the recent notice served by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to the Maharashtra government against its decision to close 1,300 schools in the state, State Education Minister Vinod Tawde said that the notice was a 'blessing in disguise'.

"It is good that the NHRC has taken up the issue and sent us a notice. With this, we would get a chance to make our stand on the issue clear in the right manner" said Tawde.

On Wednesday, the NHRC issued a notice to the state Education Department taking cognisance of its decision to close down 1,300 Zilla Parishad schools with less than 10 students and shift them to other nearby schools. The Commission observed that 'the reported decision of the State Education Department would adversely affect the students, particularly, those coming from the rural background and cannot afford education in private schools' and asked the government to submit a detailed report within four weeks.

Tawde said that despite all the criticism that the move has got, it is aimed to make education more 'inclusive'. "Students who are studying in schools with less than 10 students have no socialisation. They lose out on the opportunities of interacting with other students and other collective activities like annual days, sports etc. Our idea is to absorb them into other nearby schools so that they get an enriched learning experience" he added.
