A non-government organisation (NGO) has received mobile phone bills amounting to Rs1.4 lakh made out on the names of more than 50 of its members for services they had neither applied for nor utilized.

According to a complaint lodged by the NGO, it appears that some unidentified persons obtained SIM cards from Reliance telecom on the names of the members, by submitting fake documents and forging signatures.

The bills were delivered at the NGO's office in Mahalaxmi last week

"When we inquired with the telecom office, we found that bogus electricity bills and PAN cards of individual members and even a fake letterhead of the organisation were submitted by unidentified persons to obtain more than 50 SIM cards. The SIMs were issued on the names of our members, but the photographs attached with the documents were of some other people," said Dr Jagdish Pai, executive director of the NGP.

The members were shocked to learn that most of the calls made on the SIM cards were international calls.

A senior police official said the case has serious implications as it has revealed how easy it is for anyone to obtain SIM cards and that this could be misused even by terrorist elements.

"Telecom firms should be extremely careful when issuing SIM cards. They should physically verify the information given in the application forms," the official said.

Pradeep Gosavi, senior inspector at the Andheri police station, where the complaint was registered, said the matter had been handed over to the MIDC police, as the office of the mobile phone company, which issued the SIM cards, is located under its jurisdiction.
