There is good news for those heading to business district of Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) daily, as the Smart BKC project has received positive response from private players. The aim is to make BKC a smart district by March 2015 by implementing Built Operate Transfer or on cash contract.

What is the idea all about?
The idea is to have Wi-Fi, smart street lighting, smart parking, video analytics-based Closed Circuit Television cameras and smart phone application for public for the 175 hectares under Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority's (MMRDA) jurisdiction.

Is the idea being sold well?
According to an MMRDA official, at least four private firms have come forward after it had floated Express of Interest bids to have a modern financial centre in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

Shifting to solar-powered lamps?
By providing high speed internet, MMRDA aims that corporates will switch over to their Wi-Fi services. Another idea is to convert the existing traditional street lights into solar-powered lamp posts. "Street lighting will be automated as per the Almanac so that it gives adequate luminosity whenever needed depending upon the climate and season," informed a senior MMRDA official.

Ease of finding a parking slot
Additionally, under the smart parking concept, with above 3,000 parking slots in BKC, vehicle owners will know exactly where there is an empty slot available to park their wheels. It will also be possible to book parking space online.

A safer business district?
With close to 100 CCTV cameras, BKC will become much more secure as most of the areas will come under surveillance. If any untoward incident occurs, the system will be able to pop an alert to authorities concerned to act upon it.

A smart phone application too?
Having a smart phone application would mean scanning 175 hectares at fingertips for public to reserve a table at any restaurant or zero in on any retail store or cafeteria.
If the pilot project is successful, at a later stage, the development authority intends to replicate it at Wadala too, which is being planned as another business district of Mumbai.
