A fortnight after a newborn baby was admitted to Parel's Wadia Hospital after the intervention of Zee 24 Taas news channel with the help of medical experts, the baby (now a month old) is responding to treatment and has gained weight.

She was born prematurely with atypical features as she suffered from a condition known as Intrauterine Growth Retardation (IUGR).

She is being fed milk from the human milk bank at the hospital. The hospital administration says that the baby has to be evaluated by a number of experts and some genetic tests will have to be performed on her. She was admitted in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) after doctors looked at her deformities and very low birth weight with Intrauterine Growth Retardation. The child was assessed by neonatologists, sonologists, cardiologists, and neurologists.

On June 13, with the help of medical experts, a Zee 24 taas team got the baby, who was rejected by her mother, admitted to Wadia Hospital. According to doctors, she was born to 25-year-old Mamta Dode on May 30 at Saiwan Primary Health Centre in Dahanu. The doctor who treated her in the earlier days says the weight of the girl was just 800gm, and thus she needs special care.

Born in the seventh month of pregnancy, the month-old girl's father works as a labourer. The infant was also referred to Hariya Hospital in Vapi, before being admitted to Wadia hospital. In Vapi, doctors told the girl's family that while she would live, her heartbeat wasn't normal due to her disorder.

Doctors from Wadia Hospital have already conducted a test called 'Karyotyping' to examine chromosomes in a sample of her cells, which can help figure out if a genetic problem is indeed the cause of her disorder or disease. The report is awaited.

Wadia hospital CEO Dr Mini Bodhanwala said: “Our hospital is taking care of this infant. The infant's grandfather Dilip Dhode is happy that the baby is being taken good care of, and he has seen an improvement in the child. MRI shows an irreparable congenital anomaly of the brain. The prognosis is poor, the infant will have mental retardation and seizures may occur.

She added, “The baby's weight has increased, now it is 930 gm. She is accepting feeds well. Ophthalmology examination is normal.”
