Around 10-12 stray dogs were run over on Wednesday night. These strays were run over by drunken revellers, and according to organisations working for animal welfare, such cases were reported from Goregaon, Marol and Lokhandwala.

Omkar Rane, who is a part of the rescue operation squad of NGO SHRAM, said: "Yesterday night I got three calls from dog-lovers. They were from Goregaon, Lokhandwala and Borivali. Since we went to pick up the Borivali one, which was first call, we could not reach the other two spots and so requested the person to take the dogs to the hospital. This is a run-over case due to drunk driving. It is difficult to file police cases as they don't register cases due to lack of eyewitnesses."

Ganesh Nayak, founder and chairman, Animals Matter to Me, said, "Last night, I got one puppy whose one eye got popped out. I am sure he might have got hit by a car or a bike. There were also three other cases – but they involved bigger dogs. Of these three, one fractured its leg and the other two had minor injuries, thanks to rash driving on New Year eve."

Even charitable organisations which treat animals reported five cases of injured dogs on Wednesday.

Dr J C Khanna, secretary-officer in-charge of Society for Prevention of Cruelty of Animals hospital, Parel, said "We received many injured dogs on Wednesday night. It could be hit-and-run cases. Since there are no eyewitnesses, often we won't be able to say how they got injured."
