New world-record in solar cooking by 15,000 students in Mumbai

A new world record was created on Thursday by as many as 15,000 students from 80 schools of the city by cooking food in solar cookers.The initiative, Suryakumbh, was organised by Keshav Srushti, a social service unit, at 14 centers across the city.

The activity aimed at the importance of solar energy as a possible solution to the imminent exhaustion of conventional energy resources qualified as an entry into the Guinness Book of World Records. Children were taught how to assemble solar cookers, after which they cooked dishes of their choice in those cookers.

Dr Alka Mande, chairperson of Keshav Srushti, said, “Every child was provided with a cooker to assemble and take it home to spread awareness about the initiative among the friends and relatives. The exercise will help convey the importance of solar energy and its benefits in today’s time.”

C Vidyasagar Rao, governor of Maharashtra and Ashish Shelar, minister of state, Power, Coal & New Renewable Energy, were present at the event.
