Central Railway-built platform 1A and existing platforms 1 and 2 are connected to the FOB
In a series of big step towards enhancing Mumbai local facilities, the Central Railway (CR) has completed the construction of a new platform at Parel station towards CSMT, has connected platform 1-2 with new mini bridges and has opened a new FOB partly, on Sunday evening. CR authorities took a special block from 9.30 am to around 6.20 pm — the block was bust with delay of over 45 minutes. Chairman of Railway Board, Ashwani Lohani will inspect Parel on June 18.
Parel hosts nearly 1.5 lakh commuters daily. The new platform is expected to provide some respite from the otherwise cramped station, which barely had space to walk the platform or climb the FOB. The CR authorities have connected the existing island platform 1 and 2 with the new one (platform 1A), which is next to platform 1, using mini bridges.
The mini bridges will allow commuters to come onto the existing platform, which connects to the FOB. A new 12-meter-wide FOB is being built and is expected to be ready by June-end. On Sunday, the existing rail line was cut and joined with a new one leading to the platform. Chief PRO of Central Railway, Sunil Udasi, said, "The block ended on time. It will help to decongest the station. We are now one step closer to Parel Terminus."
The new structure is part of the Rs 51 crore Parel Terminus project in the larger scheme of things, which was stuck since a decade. This terminus will allow having the additional 5-6 lines meant for long distance trains. Sources say if land acquisition between Parel-CSMT becomes a problem then they can end the 5-6 lines in Parel at this terminus.
The Railways will be using the Parel workshop for the construction of the coaching complex which would facilitate platforms and other infrastructure for passengers arriving and departing in long distance trains. This complex has been proposed at a cost of Rs 193 crore.
