The Health Department of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will soon create a cadre of freshly graduated MBBS students to treat patients with minor problems at its major hospitals. The move is expected to reduce pressure from senior doctors who have to deal with patients with major problems.

The young doctors will have to ensure that patients coming to KEM, BYL Nair and Sion hospitals are first screened at the entry level and patients with minor problems don't have to wait for a long time unnecessarily.

A senior official from BMC's Health Department said that these major hospitals are over-crowded and most of the patients come for minor problems like fever. "If these patients are treated at entry level, the overcrowding can be sorted out to some extent," said the official.

The Health Department will make a pool of new doctors from its medical colleges. "Many students do not get admission in post graduate courses due to low availability of seats. They then either start their own practice or join private hospitals to get exposure," said the official. He added that this will give them an opportunity to gain practical experience.

As per the 2017 annual report of KEM hospital, the hospital saw around 19.67 lakh patients in OPD of which 6.48 lakh were new and 13.18 lakh were old patients. In addition, the hospital also saw 83,000 admissions and over 65,000 surgeries. Other major hospitals too have similar numbers.

Additional Municipal Commissioner (Health), IA Kundan, said, "We are working to strengthen peripheral hospitals to release pressure from the major hospitals. Forming a pool of fresh doctors is part of it. The patients with chronic or major problems should be given more attention in major hospitals while patients with minor problem like fever can be treated at peripheral hospitals."

To Ease Crowds

  • Civic-run hospitals are over-crowded and most patients visit with minor problems like fever.
  • The new graduates will direct patients with major problems to senior doctors.
