In a bid to reduce cases of derailments and accidents, the Indian Railways is working on laser sensors that will read faults in the wheels of the rake. The sensors are called Online Monitoring Of Rolling Stock (OMRS) and consist of laser-cum-camera.

On an average, 800 wheels fail annually. The pilot project is being tested on the Delhi-Panipat stretch, and will be tested on Mumbai’s Central and Western Railways soon.

The Ministry hopes to implement it in a month’s time at 25 sites across the nation.

“The pilot project on the Delhi-Panipat section has been successful, and 25 sites have been approved for implementation in the first phase,” said Arun Arora, Principal Chief Mechanical Engineer, Northern Railway. Surat-Vadodara, Jalgaon-Bhusawal and Wardha-Nagpur are some of the sections finalised for the first run. These will be installed within the next one-and-a-half year at a cost of Rs 113 crore, which includes maintenance for five years.

Forty more sites will be identified for the next phase, which will include Mumbai-Surat and Mumbai-Roha lines.

OMRS involves placing of microphones, cameras and sensors next to the tracks to monitor the condition of wheels. The sensor gauges and can identify the smallest of errors in the wheels of a train while it is in operation, while microphones record the noise.

The degradation of the wheels or any technical fault will be displayed in yellow, green and red colour.

Sensor & colours

  • The degradation of the wheels or any technical fault will be displayed in yellow, green and red.
  • Yellow signifies the wheels are safe, green that maintenance should be done and red that wheel degradation has begun to take place
  • The sensors are so sharp that it can also pick up any change in sound.
