Mahim residents will finally get a new foot overbridge (FOB) at the railway station, which will help them cross the busy Senapati Bapat Marg junction. Built at a cost of Rs 5 crore, the new FOB will be an extension to the existing railway bridge. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) estimates it would take them 15 months to complete its construction, excluding the four monsoon months.
There has been a high demand regarding the FOB since the last few months, especially given that many school children cross the busy intersection. "There used to be a rail gate near Mahim station. It was closed a few years ago after the BMC built an FOB. Children studying at St. Michael School, KJ Khilnani School and the local BMC school use the FOB to cross the railway line. But this ends at the railway station and the students cross the SB Road on foot. We've been demanding they extend the FOB to help commuters cross the road as well," said Milind Vaidya, corporator and former mayor.
Local corporator Sheetal Gambhir said, "Many residents, especially women, avoid using the FOB because some people create nuisance on the footpath. But the proposed extension would connect Mori Road directly with Dharavi on the other side of the railway tracks, so residents can use it again."
As per the proposal now, m/s Kuwala Corporation will build the bridge. "The bridge is 32.4 metres long and 4 metres in width. It would be ready for use in 2020," said an officer from the BMC.
The bridge was originally estimated to cost Rs 2.83 crore, but costs have escalated by 22 per cent more. The cost increased to Rs 4.89 crore, of which Rs 3.46 crore is the construction cost, and technical adviser fee is Rs 7.59 lakh. The remaining are taxes.
