In order to take stock of Mumbai’s monsoon-preparedness, BMC chief Ajoy Mehta headed the first pre-monsoon meeting for this year with disaster management experts to review the situation in flood-prone areas.

“Rendering good services for citizens’ are our priority. This includes good quality water supply, a good sewage system, and good garbage facilities,” said the BMC chief.
He added that civic officials have to do away with the lethargic attitude they may have shown in the past and ensure that all roads are pothole-free and have no water logging issues so that citizens can enjoy the monsoons without any chaos.

BMC chief’s five civic priorities

  • Water logging

  • Dilapidated buildings

  • Poor condition of roads

  • Monsoon-related disease

  • Garbage collection

Making his stand very clear about completion of projects, Mehta said that there was no room for excuses, if civic issues were not resolved by the end of May. “If the officials fail to stick to the deadlines, strict action will be taken against the contractor, engineer and the official in charge. The civic body will review the measures taken in the 40 water-logging prone spots in the city. Considering the safety of the people, notices will be served to all dilapidated building, irrespective of whether they are hospitals or schools” said Mehta.

In the three hour long meeting the BMC commissioner directed senior civic officials to hold regular review meeting to tackle five point issues. Taking note of diseases like Dengue, Malaria and Diarrhoea that had broken out during the previous monsoon he asked officials of the health department to find out the root-cause of these diseases.

A senior official from the ward, on the condition of anonymity said, “The commissioner wants garbage disposal and collection to be regularised because there are complaints of garbage pile-up in many areas.” The meeting was attended by the BMC officials, and other government agencies like Railways, BEST, MMRDA, MSRDC, traffic police, NDRF, Reliance energy etc.
