Irked over mismanagement, Opposition parties in Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have demanded that the civic administration should come out with the 'White Paper' on the status of tabs used by civic school students. The issue of providing charging points for the tabs was tabled in the standing committee on Wednesday almost a year after the devices were distributed.

Sandeep Deshpande, leader of MNS, said that it is learnt that many tabs have developed problems and students have returned them to schools. They are yet to be repaired and given back. "What is the use if tabs did not have blue tooth, WiFi or download facility. After a year, civic administration has attained the wisdom of providing charging points, but what about the other facilities needed for the studies," questioned Deshpande.

Rais Shaikh of Samajwadi Party said that tabs were of inferior quality and the civic administration should give all the details of their present status. However, Trushna Vishwasrao appealed to the members that though delayed the committee should approve the proposal for providing charging points as it is needed for the students in the digital age and that students are using the Tabs to the fullest for the studies.

BMC, which was already facing criticism of not providing Tabs as per the promised specifications, has now decided to provide charging points in civic schools. Last year, BMC purchased at least 27,000 tabs for students of class VIII and IX at the cost of more than Rs35 crore. Until now, students use to queue up in the school to charge their tabs before using it for studies. Now, the civic body will spend Rs1.09 crore to provide plug points and spike guards, including electrical wiring.

The proposal to buy tabs was passed in the civic standing committee in August last year. However, civic body faced lot of criticism as ruling Shivsena was accused of purchasing outdated version of Tabs which were of 2013 and were given in the year 2015.
