Jupiter Hospital is once again in the news for all the wrong reasons. A Thane-based politician has filed a case in the Bombay high court against its authorities for using the land meant for the facility to build a hotel.

On July 19, high court heard the petition filed by BJP's Rajkumar Yadav from Thane. Yadav has alleged that in 2003, the state government gave away a 10,328 sqmtr plot to build Jupiter Hospital at a very reasonable rate.

“The authorities told the health department, the Thane Municipal Corporation, district collectorate and other authorities that they would indeed build a hospital. However, they built Fortune Hotel on a plot of 75,000 sqft,” alleged Yadav in his petition.

He also said that the hospital was given permission to have 287 beds out of which 15% should be reserved for treating people below poverty line. “Till date, how many such patients have been treated by the hospital should also be investigated,” he added.

Though the petition was filed on June 30 by Yadav, it came up for hearing on July 19 and the hospital has been asked to file its reply by August 16.

When we contacted Dilip Shirsagar from the legal department of Jupiter Hospital, he said, “The hospital as well as the hotel have been built as this project is the first medical health tourism project sanctioned by the government of Maharashtra. I can even say this is India's first such project.”

“We will give them our reply in the court on August 16,” he added.

In January this year, the hospital was in news for being one of the charitable trust hospitals to be scrutinised by TMC's standing committee regarding rendering of services to the poor.
