The LT Marg police stated that they had been holding meeting with local residents, telling them to take precautions against the possibility of a fire, and that their appeals went unheard. On Saturday, the police found that the lane did not have a single fire extinguisher that could have been used when the fire initially broke out. The police will suggest that the civic body and the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport conduct a periodic audit of old buildings in Kalbadevi and Bhuleshwar.

"Gokul Niwas building has no fire fighting measures whatsoever in place. Had there been a fire extinguisher, then it would have been of immense help when the fire had just broken out," said a police officer.

"When we rushed to the spot we searched several nearby buildings, but could not find a single fire extinguisher or water back-up in any of the buildings. The local police have been meeting residents and have been making them aware about the fire safety measures that need to be taken, but the residents and shopkeepers do not comply with our appeal," the officer said.

The LT Marg police have given notices and taken action on several gold manufacturing units in Bhuleshwar over fire safety norms.

Another problem that the police encountered was the massive and probably "unnecessary" usage of air conditioners (AC) in the buildings.

"In most of the buildings in Bhuleshwar and Kalbadevi, people have ACs for each room without even finding out whether the wiring is capable of taking the load. If the ACs draw more power than the capacity of the wiring, this would result in a short circuit," the officer said.

Considering all these issues, the police are planning to write to authorities concerned- including the BMC and BEST- asking them to conduct periodic audits to avoid such incidents in future.

"When a fire occurs, because there are no firefighting measures in place, people run for their lives leaving everything behind, and wait for fire officials and police to show up. BMC and fire brigade should ensure that every building has at least one fire extinguisher, so that a small fire can be tackled until the time the fire brigade reaches the spot. An audit should be conducted by BEST to check whether the wiring can take the load of multiple ACs. BMC should also conduct audit of godowns and warehouses in old buildings," the officer said.
