A 28-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly kidnapping and raping a 19-year-old deaf-and-mute girl who is also mentally challenged, around 6pm on Thursday.

The incident took place at RBT colony in Mankhurd when the girl was alone at home. Her mother, who does domestic chores in the neighbourhood, returned home from work to find that her daughter was nowhere to be found. That’s when she and her relatives alerted their neighbours and, for the next hour or so, they scouted for the girl in the neighbourhood. She was nowhere to be found.

When they returned home over an hour later, the girl’s mother saw her daughter stepping out of the house of Santosh Chandivade, an unemployed man who lives in the same locality. She sensed something amiss as it was unusual for the girl to step out of the house.

Using sign language, the girl’s mother asked her daughter why she had gone to Chandivade’s house. She told her that Chandivade had called her over, promising to give her chocolate.

“The girl then told her mother, in sign language, about the sexual assault,” said inspector Pramod Kadam of Mankhurd police station.

The girl’s mother informed the neighbours about what her daughter had narrated to her. They then lodged a complaint at Mankhurd police station.

The girl was sent for a medical examination at the municipality-run Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar. A report of the medical examination has confirmed that she was raped.

Chandivade, who has been booked for abduction and rape, was sent to police custody till August 6 by a metropolitan magistrate’s court.
