The team of doctors investigating the death of a 60-year-old man at KEM hospital, Parel, has found that peripheral hospitals like Rajawadi and Cooper hospitals regularly send interns with patients, instead of doctors, while they are transferred to a tertiary care hospital.

The investigation found that its was this negligence on the part of Copper hospital that led to the death of Budhaji Ramane while being transferred to KEM on late Monday night.

Ramane was accompanied by an intern to KEM. Once they reached KEM, the intern left without even ensuring that Ramane was admitted to a ward. The security staff of the hospital later found Ramane's body outside the hospital's blood bank.

When patients are so transferred from one hospital to another, rules say a trained doctor should accompany the patient, not interns.

Dr AK Gvalani, acting dean of KEM hospital, has now written to the chief medical superintendent of peripheral hospitals to ensure that this negligence is not repeated.

"It's very shocking that an incident like this happened. While the committee is looking into medical negligence, we have sent a letter to the chief medical superintendent of peripheral hospitals to ensure patients are accompanied by a trained doctor," he said.

Ramane, who was injured in a road accident, sustained injuries on the left leg and the cause of his death was recorded as shock and haemorrhage from crush injury on left lower limbs.

"Though it was the intern's responsibility, he can't be blamed entirely. It was the hospital's and the head of the department's responsibility to send a trained doctor. So far, we have ignored this, but in future this won't be allowed," said Gvalani.

The investigation team is yet to submit its final report.
