In the backdrop of the fire that killed 14 people in Kamala Mills, the Maharashtra Navanirman Vidyarthi Sena (MNVS) has written to the Chief Minister to conduct fire audits in schools.

The letter cites a 2009 order of the Supreme Court making it mandatory for all the schools to conduct fire safety audits and have fire prevention systems in place. "The Kamala Mills tragedy was an eye opener as the devastation happened due to poor fire safety. Despite the court order, several schools across the city and the state run without proper fire safety equipment even today. If an unfortunate incident happens, it would put the lives of innocent students at risk" said Chetan Pednekar, President, MNVS who has written to the CM.

Pednekar stated that the state government should not only ensure that the schools have proper infrastructure and fire safety equipment, but also that fire audits are done regularly and a report of the same is submitted to the state government.
