The Congress on Thursday withdrew its official candidature from the by-election for the sole seat in the legislative council. It had pitched Mohan Joshi against NCP state president Sunil Tatkare, paving the way for him to be elected unopposed.

Nawab Mailk, NCP spokesperson, said that they were thankful to Congress. "It will help both the parties because Tatkare will be free now to campaign in the state assembly polls," said Malik.

Meanwhile, the Congress has started the interviews for the state assembly election. The interviews will be conducted by the election committee headed by state unit chief Manikrao Thakre on August 17, 19 and 20.
