An office-bearer of Nationalist Congress Party was shot at twice by an unidentified man in Badlapur, Thane district, around 11.30am on Wednesday. The injured man, Yogesh Raut, has been admitted to All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Badlapur with stomach injuries. His condition is reportedly serious.

This is the second such shooting incident in Badlapur in as many days.

Raut, vice-president of the political party's Badlapur unit, had stepped out of a restaurant near his house when a Scorpio bearing registration number MH05AZ2121 briefly halted close to him.

One of the three men who were in the car pulled out a gun and shot at Raut, said the police, adding that Raut collapsed unconscious. "A few bystanders managed to get a glimpse of the registration number of the vehicle just as it sped past," said a police officer, adding that they are verifying whether the car had been stolen. Some of the onlookers took Raut to hospital.

The police said they have not yet registered a first information report as Raut's statement is still to be recorded. A police officer quoted doctors as saying that Raut's condition was serious.

An officer from Badalpur police station said that they could register a first information report if Raut's family members approach them. None of the police officers was willing to be quoted in this case.

Another shooting
A 38-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly shooting his friend over a minor tiff at Station pada in Badlapur on Sunday night. A local court remanded Mahendra Baghul in custody for seven days.
Baghul, who the police said is a history-sheeter, allegedly shot at 48-year-old estate agent Santosh Salvi over some previous enmity. An officer from Badalpur police station said that the revolver used by Baghul was illegal and a probe is on to find out where he had procured it from.
